Essential Skills That Every Driving Instructor Must Master

An expert driving instructor needs more than a re-knowledge of traffic rules and driving. They need to be excellent at communication to explain difficult concepts in simple terms. Because all the learners are different in their potential and calibers. Thus what works for then one may not work for the other. Therefore a skilled instructor can break down complex concepts and skills into simple concepts to ensure the effective learning of students. Moreover, another essential skill that a driving instructor has to master in an instructor training course, is hazard awareness and quick decision-making.

As an instructor, you have to anticipate risks and thus teach learners how to react in emergency road situations. Furthermore, they have to learn to stay calm and composed during emergencies to teach nervous beginners who may freak out during real-world driving experiences. Furthermore, the instructor has to master organizational skills so that they can prepare individual-centered lessons to address the specific needs of their learners. These skills are necessary for a learner to have thus instructor training courses are designed to teach them to aspiring instructors.

Step-by-Step Guide To Earn ADI Qualification

To become a certified instructor you’ll have to pass the ADI qualification process. This process includes three tests called ADI part1,2 and 3. In part 1 of ADI, your theoretical knowledge about driving is tested through videos and multiple-choice questions. In this part, you have to talk about safety driving rules, hazard perception, and driving techniques. After passing part 1 you will move to ADI part 2. Here your physical ability to drive will be tested. It’s like a practical driving test where you will have to demonstrate a high level of driving competence.

After passing ADI part 2, you can apply for a trainee license known as PDI. With this license you will get permission to teach people but only for six months. In this period you will get a chance to refine and enhance your teaching and driving skills. After this phase, you have to go through ADI part 3, in which your instructional ability will be tested. In this test, you will have to instruct learners in real-world driving situations and the examiner will observe your ability to guide learners. If you pass part three then you will become a certified Approved Driving Instructor(ADI). After becoming an ADI you can join a driving school or work separately.

Duration Required to Become a Driving Instructor?

The time required to become a certified driving instructor varies depending on the learner’s space and ability to grasp the skills. Moreover, it is also dependent on the way you schedule your lessons. On average it may take six to twelve months to become a qualified driving instructor. However, this duration can vary depending on the nature of the learner and the learning environment. If a learner dedicates more time to learning then this duration can be shortened. Furthermore, in instructor training courses,  the ADI part 1 generally takes less time.

But ADI parts 2 and 3 require the demonstration of practical driving and instructional skills, thus they take more time. This duration may vary depending on how frequently you take lessons and schedule exams. Flexible training programs allow learners to progress at their own pace. Therefore some learners go for intensive driving lessons to speed up their training process. Some learners only like the gradual learning process because it helps them to understand things easily. With the right training program and dedication becoming a qualified driving instructor in a suitable timeframe is easy.
